Ofloxacin and levofloxacin do not affect the fetus and even do not have toxicity risk when mother decides to breastfeed. However, an alternative drug such as azithromycin is also advised since it is safe and effective. Test need to be held after 3 up to 4 weeks of treatment is completed. Retest around 3 months after treatment completed is essential to make sure that there is no infection persistent in mother and neonates.
Chlamydia medication early pregnancy screening
It is better if you can detect chlamydia trachomatis infection early during pregnancy. That is why taking initial prenatal screening is a great start. Another screening is also needed to be taken during the third trimester to make sure that there is no postnatal complication and infant infection of chlamydia.
Chlamydia medication safe antibiotic list
The first recommended antibiotic for pregnant women is azithromycin. You just need 1 g of this antibiotic in a single dose. Besides azithromycin, there are also several antibiotics that advised. Those alternatives antibiotics are amoxicillin and erythromycin. For erythromycin, you can take the 250, 400, 500 and 800 mg. Each of erythromycin will be needed to take four times per day. The length of antibiotic dosage itself will differentiate between each type of erythromycin.
Amoxicillin 500 mg is needed to take 3 times per day for about 7 days. Erythromycin base 500 mg will be needed to take orally four times per day for about 7 days. A different dosage of antibiotic will be advised if you take erythromycin base 250 mg. This type of antibiotic will need longer treatment period around 14 days with 4 times per day orally consumption. The same length of treatment period will be applied for erythromycin ethylsuccinate 400 mg with 4 times per days oral intake. Erythromycin ethylsuccinate 800 mg will need shorter period around 7 days with 4 intakes per days orally.
Chlamydia medication alternatives
Besides those common antibiotics for pregnant women with chlamydia as described above, there is also an alternative to take. Amoxicillin nowadays commonly used as an alternative. Even though considered safe enough but some side effect may also happen. Erythromycin sometimes can be resulting gastrointestinal problem. To minimize the side effect, you can lower the erythromycin dose into 14 days. What you need to do is doing a prior consultation with your doctor before taking any medication to make sure that you get the right one for your chlamydia medication.
